Ā Dr. Trent, a HBCU graduate and former secretary of education for the Commonwealth of Virginia,Ā was appointed to this position by President Joe Biden in February of 2022. The White House Initiative on HBCUs is the most important entity for HBCUs to gain access to federal resources, including Title III, student aid, and grants and contracts from across 30+ federal agencies. Dr. Trent will address HBCUs working with the American Golf Industry Coalition.

Recent SCOTUS decisions abolishing Affirmative Action, allowing public entities to discriminate against the LGBTQ community (ruling on a fictional, bogus case that shouldn’t have been heard), and prohibiting President Biden from offering relief to students burden with college debt simply fortifies my contention that conscientious student/athletes should strongly consider selecting and attending universities in states that believe in democracy, DEI – diversity, equity and inclusion – and the American dream for all juxtaposed to states with governors, senators, congress persons and politicians who consistently and insidiously vote against minority interests.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Almost ten weeks ago, Joe Redmond broached the possibility of revisiting the stories of some of theĀ  remarkable, iconic HBCU coaches with WG publisher Bobby R. Henry. After speaking with Bobby about Coach Redmond’s idea, which I found intriguing and fascinating, I connected with Coach Redmond to develop a plan of action which led to past treasures like Jake Gaither, John Merritt, and Marino Casem among others. Speaking every week, I dubbed Coach Redmond ā€œ The Collaborator ā€œ because he possessed intrinsic, first hand knowledge about several of the icons featured.

Schools also would be required to offer at least 210 scholarships each year, amounting to no less than $6 million in athletics scholarships offered, the website reported.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Contrary to the NBA Players Association position,Ā  I believe the 25 game suspension for Ja Morant is fair in light of second gun violation. His future as a potential hall of fame player and as a man depends on a positive outcome. And if things go as planned, the suspension can be modified.

Ā  For the past two months our focused has been centered around iconic HBCU coaches such as Big John Merritt, Alonzo ā€œJake ā€œ Gaither, Eddie ā€œ Black Jesus ā€œ Robinson, Marino ā€œ The Godfather ā€œ Casem,Ā Ā Earl ā€œ Papa Bear ā€ Banks,Ā Ā W. C. Gordon and William James ā€œBillyā€ Nicks. Our series concludes with HBCU stalwart and Wilberforce University graduate Arnett (Ace) Mumford, whose career began at Jarvis Christian College from 1924-27 where he compiled a 6-8-3 won/loss record.Ā Ā His fortunes improved drastically at his next appointment, Bishop College, consummating a 3-year tenure there from 1927-29 with a 22-7-1 record. At Bishop College he also coached basketball and baseball.Ā
