Nunnie on the Sideline

Contrary to the NBA Players Association position,  I believe the 25 game suspension for Ja Morant is fair in light of second gun violation. His future as a potential hall of fame player and as a man depends on a positive outcome. And if things go as planned, the suspension can be modified.

When I was growing up in the south, baseball was an extremely popular sport, played by many in our community. Willie Mays was actually my idol, and I even emulated his trademark basket catch.  Other great players, many of whom were Alabama natives or at least southern, included Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Tommie Aaron, Monte Irvin, Junior Gilliam, Larry Doby and Ernie Banks.

Now that basketball season has ended, I can focused on MLB. The game has evolved in many ways, most notably the proliferation of players of Latin descent, many of color. They are highly skilled at what they do, they display a genuine love for game, the financial rewards are substantial and the opportunities to change their own lives and  families are astounding. They bring a certain flair to game that in bygone days may have been frowned upon. I will keep a close vigil on season’s outcome. The Marlins are definitely trending in the right direction. Please, no more fire sales after experiencing success.

I wish New York Yankee Aaron Judge well as he recovers from a severe foot injury.

Rhetorical question: Name manager of last year’s World Series champions? Bonus: Who is the Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager?

Too bad the NCAA college World Series between the eventual champion LSU Tigers and the Florida Gators proved so anticlimactic. In hindsight the winner of the first game (won by LSU on an eleventh inning walk off home run) in a three game series was prophetic as the next two games won by the Gators (24-4) and Tigers (18-4) respectively proved so lopsided.

Now that the NIL concept has become a reality in amateur sports, I wonder just how fair and effective it will be. Will only the superstars benefit financially or is there enough in the pot to support all. I also believe the ability to transfer freely will be detrimental to college sports. Loyalty to a school or community has gone the way of the Ford Pinto .

I suppose you have to be a diehard basketball fan to constantly watch the WNBA; however, in the games that I’ve seen, the young ladies play an aggressive, fast- paced game, displaying incredible skill and athleticism. The WNBA has evolved into a quality professional league with great players and coaches. Don’t sell them short.

`I also love track and field as a spectator sport, and I would love to see it evolve where major/mid-major cities form competitive teams and compete for championships.

If you enjoyed our series on iconic HBCU coaches, I’m open to suggestions in other related sports areas, no matter the sport.
