BOCA RATON, FL. — On Sunday, October 27, a diverse coalition of over 100 community members gathered at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton for the “Souls to the Polls Early Voting Rally.” Organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of South Palm Beach County, the advocacy arm of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County; Temple Beth El of Boca Raton; DISC of Pearl City; and churches in Pearl City—Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Macedonia A.M.E. Church, and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church—the event aimed to empower local citizens to exercise their right to vote while fostering community solidarity.
Attendees were moved by speeches from local leaders, including Rabbi Greg Weisman of Temple Beth El, Reverend Ronald L. Brown of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and League of Women Voters Volunteer Dylan Gaynor. Each speaker emphasized the significance of voter participation, particularly in communities that have historically faced voting obstacles. The rally encouraged participants to “stand in their power” and recognize the influence of their vote.
Rabbi Greg Weisman, also chair of the JCRC, described the event as a “civic and spiritual triumph,” emphasizing the unity and empowerment displayed. “Both the Jewish and Black communities, two minorities who have been part of the fabric of our country since its inception, keenly understand the power of advocating for ourselves through voting,” he stated. “As we came together, we celebrated the importance of every voter casting their ballot.”
Following the rally, participants marched to the Boca Raton Downtown Library, where they participated in early voting. The event honored the legacy of “Souls to the Polls,” a movement rooted in the Civil Rights Era, when historically Black churches would march to polling sites after Sunday services to promote voter turnout. By echoing this legacy, the “Souls to the Polls Early Voting Rally” highlighted the value of every vote and the power of communal effort.
“This rally is not just about voting; it’s a demonstration of our commitment to democracy and community engagement. Every vote cast today is a testament to our collective resolve to shape a more inclusive and just society,” said Marissa Trowbridge, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council.
