Sometimes voters just get it wrong. Whether it’s because they don’t show up to the ballot box or they decide to simply vote down party lines, they get it wrong and getting it wrong can be catastrophic.
In 2016, the voters got it wrong. America voted businessman Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States. For four years, Trump unleashed havoc. I won’t rehash the insanity that went on for four years. If you’re not convinced that Trump was the most ignorant, ineffective, and undeserving president in American history, there’s nothing I can do in this article to prove otherwise.
In 2020, there were some brave Republicans who stepped up and prioritized country over party. They publicly denounced Trump and withdrew their support for his reelection. A few drew the line at throwing their support and endorsement at Joe Biden, but some exercised a higher loyalty to our country over party. Cindy McCain, the wife of late Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, endorsed Biden in rebuke of Trump. McCain’s daughter, Meghan, stopped short of endorsing Biden in 2020, but she didn’t mince words when criticizing Trump. Other notable Republicans who publicly and vehemently supported Biden in 2020 were former Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, former Ohio Governor John Kasich and New York Congresswoman Susan Molinari. Kasich and Vondy McCain spoke at the Democratic National Convention.
Fast forward to 2024, several notable Republicans are again prioritizing country over party and endorsing Kamala Harris for president. Former Wyoming Republican Senator Liz Cheney, who is also the daughter of former vice president, Dick Cheney has not only endorsed Harris, she is actively on the campaign trail with her willing father in tow. Dick Cheney publicly announced last week that he will vote for Harris. “Republicans for Harris” has become a movement because many long time Republicans believe that Trump is just too dangerous to return to the White House with his Project 25 agenda.
More than a dozen Republican lawyers who represented Presidents Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush wrote a letter endorsing and outlining why they support Harris. To date, fifteen former GOP Representatives have joined former Illinois GOP Representative Adam Kinzinger and endorsed Harris. Three former GOP governors have joined former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoffe Duncan and endorsed Harris. Notable Republicans from the Trump White House administration such as Stephanie Graham and Olivia Troye have all endorsed Harris.
If Republicans can do it, so must Democrats. When Dems see what is catastrophic to the country and community, they must be willing to abandon party and align with the greater good.
This brings me to Broward politics because I hold firm that the politicians that impact me most directly are local politicians. Commissioners, mayors, and school board members make decisions that affect my community and me directly. I fear that Broward county’s dismal showing at the polls compounded by simply voting down party lines is something that people in the Black and Brown communities are going to soon regret. Broward Democrats made non-partisan races partisan by perseverating(stuck on stupid) on the party affiliation and governor appointment of candidates for school board Seat 1 and Seat 2. The issues were not on the ballot, political party was.
Simply put, Broward Democrats ran poor candidates. Democrats have a responsibility to find better candidates to support the Democrat agenda, even if it means running Democrats against each other to weed out the bad ones. When and if a
Democrat candidate proves to be bad for the party, Democrats must put country and community before party and support the better candidate from the other party. Republicans have. The Democrat Party has become almost unrecognizable. Its continued existence cannot afford Republicans in Democrat clothing. Dems must do better.
