Florida A&M football landed a significant addition at quarterback with the transfer of C.J. Montes.

The former Fordham standout and Walter Payton Award finalist. Montes, who announced his commitment to the Rattlers for the 2025 season, brings a proven track record and high expectations to Tallahassee as he looks to lead FAMU back into SWAC title contention.

Montes, 6 feet 2 inches and 205 pounds, started his collegiate career at New Mexico before transferring to Fordham, where he made an immediate impact.

In 2023, Montes started 11 games for the Rams, completing 241 of 376 passes for 3,000 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just one interception, adding 158 rushing yards and three scores. His performance earned him second-team All-Patriot League honors and recognition as a Walter Payton Award finalist, a prestigious accolade for the top offensive player in FCS football.

After a promising start to the 2024 season, Montes was limited to just three games due to a lower-body injury suffered against Stony Brook. He completed 34 of 44 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown before entering the transfer portal on December 3, 2024. Montes initially committed to Kent State, but changed course after a coaching change, ultimately choosing Florida A&M as his next destination.

Montes expressed his excitement about joining the Rattlers, posting on social media:

“Rattler nation… I’m home,” Montes wrote, signaling his commitment to FAMU and his readiness to compete for the starting job.

Florida A&M‘s head coach and staff have not made official statements yet, but Montes’s addition comes at a pivotal time.

The Rattlers are seeking a new leader under center following the departure of Daniel Richardson, who helped guide the team to recent SWAC success. With backup quarterback Junior Muratovic entering the transfer portal, Montes is expected to compete immediately for the starting role.

Montes arrives at Florida A&M with a reputation for accuracy, poise, and leadership qualities that could make him a difference-maker in the SWAC race.

As the Rattlers prepare to open the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Montes to see if he can replicate his Fordham success and lead FAMU back to championship contention.
