When the word CANCER is mentioned, many people cringe. Some of you have only seen the damage cancer can do, and others have been through the grueling process of treatment and the blessings of recovery. Deetra Sands Durham is a native of Broward County, a graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, Spelman College, active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and her church, to name a few.

When Deetra Sands Durham was diagnosed, went through treatments and survived cancer, she was compelled to help others. She decided to create a foundation that would support cancer survivors, cancer caregivers and those with a vested interest.

Panelists: Board certified Psychiatrist, Marie Lumbart Dr. Lauren Carcas, Baptist South Healthcare (c) Deetra Durham, Dr. Delvina Thomas, Board certified Psychiatrist and Felecia Freemon, Physical Therapist.

And, after all of the research and paperwork was done, EMPOWERED TO THRIVE, INC., was born. When asked what she hopes this organization to accomplish, she said, “My desire is to help all women living with and beyond cancer and cancer diagnosis. The Foundation’s efforts will provide a safe place to share and learn as a community thrives, in order to support a woman’s journey. Empowered To Thrive, Inc. and its resources of information will be open to educate and assist all women, particularly women of color in this journey to thrive.”

To launch her new organization, she recently had a free program for the community, featuring a panel discussion with medical experts, and a healthy lunch. Each of the panelists provided a wealth of information and explanations. Tina Duke was in the audience, and she never experienced cancer, but she said, “This was so informative and encouraging, I can’t wait for the next event.” Marilyn Jones, Chair of the Board of Empowered to Thrive, Inc., was ecstatic that the goal of empowering and educating the community was met and then some.

The audience was filled with members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Spelman College Alumnae, The Links Inc., other Divine Nine organizations and supporters from the community.

The Westside Gazette congratulates Deetra Sands Durham on this new venture.
