Submitted by Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Member of Congress

I would like to share some information about the new IRS Direct File Tool. This tool is for qualifying Floridians who want to file their taxes quickly, easily, and for free. Filing taxes is an important responsibility and can be a source of critical financial relief for many people. Direct File is an exciting opportunity for you to access free, safe, and easy tax filing services.

 Am I eligible?

Eligibility criteria: If you are a taxpayer from Florida and your tax situation in 2023 was relatively simple, you can use Direct File to file your taxes. This platform is suitable if you want to claim common credits like the EITC and the CTC.

If your income came from W-2 employment, you are most likely eligible to use Direct File. Before you start filing, Direct File provides a screener tool that will ensure you are using the right tool for your specific situation. Visit directfile.irs.gov to learn more eligibility specifics.

What do I get with Direct File?

An interview-based tool that walks you through the steps of preparing the return with simple and easy-to-understand questions.

File your return in your web browser, computer, or phone.

Live chat support from certified IRS assistance agents while filing.

Option to file in English or Spanish.

A guaranteed free experience!

 What should I do?

Visit directfile.irs.gov on your computer, tablet, or phone to check your eligibility.

If eligible, create an ID.me login account (check out this step-by-step guide in case you need help)

*Direct File uses ID.me to make sure your tax data is absolutely secure.

Use the simple interview-style tool to complete your federal taxes in under an hour.

How long will this take?

In most cases, Direct File should not take you more than an hour to complete.

If you can’t finish all at once, you can save your progress and finish your return later.

 What if I need help?

When using Direct File, you can access live chat support with IRS staff in both English and Spanish. If needed, your live chat request can become a call with a representative for additional support.

For more information about Direct File, you can also visit directfile.irs.gov.

What if I’m an immigrant?

Tax filers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) who have previously filed taxes can participate. Tax filers with a Social Security Number (SSN) can apply regardless of previously filed taxes.
