MIAMI GARDENS, FL — Florida Memorial University (FMU) will celebrate the academic accomplishments and dedication of its outstanding students at the annual Honors and Awards Day on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Lou Rawls Performing Arts Center.

This year’s theme, “FMU Lions: Rising Stars of Excellence” highlights the university’s enduring commitment to academic distinction and leadership development. The event recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship, service, and perseverance throughout the academic year.

Serving as keynote speaker will be Ms. Jumorrow Terra Poitier, Director of Community Outreach and Anti-Human Trafficking Coordinator for the Broward State Attorney’s Office. Poitier brings a powerful message shaped by her extensive work serving vulnerable populations and promoting justice across Florida and beyond.

A proud native of Deerfield Beach, Poitier is a graduate of Deerfield Beach High School and Texas College, an esteemed Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Her professional expertise spans support for victims and survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. She has worked closely with organizations such as the FBI, Homeland Security, and Global Ties International, convening international dialogues on combating transnational crime and exploitation.

Poitier has been featured on NBC 6’s “In the Mix” for her advocacy around domestic minor sex trafficking in Florida. She co-authored Sister2Sister: Untold Stories of Courage, Connection & Community, an Amazon #1 best-seller, and serves as founder and CEO of SheMeHer, Inc., a nonprofit empowering women and girls through mentorship and awareness initiatives.

The university invites students, faculty, staff, families, and members of the community to join this special ceremony recognizing the best and brightest Lions of 2026.

“Honors and Awards Day is one of the most inspiring traditions at Florida Memorial University ” said President William McCormick. It affirms our collective vision of excellence and leadership rooted in the FMU legacy.”
