In news that no one hoped for, on Friday evening, September 13th, the Missouri City Police Department’s (MCPD) Criminal Investigation Division received confirmation, from the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner, that the skeletal remains found on Monday, September 9, 2024, have been positively identified by dental records as Karen Miles, 61.

The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy of Karen and determined the manner of death to be homicide, by a single gunshot wound.

Karen’s family has been notified and the investigation into Karen’s disappearance has now turned into a homicide investigation.

Criminal charges have now been filed with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, charging Davante Clark with Aggravated Robbery and Capital Murder.

One day after Clark was named a person of interest into Karen’s disappearance, MCPD released information that skeletal remains had been found.

After receiving a tip, MCPD followed up and found the skeletal remains on Blue Ridge Road in Fort Bend County, which is just four miles from where Karen was last seen alive on August 21st.

Just last week, the Forward Times published a story entitled Karen Miles: Where is She? where we reported on the countless family, friends, and community members who held out hope in finding the 61-year-old woman who had been missing since August 21, alive.

As initially reported, family members contacted the Missouri City Police Department (MCPD) to report Karen missing on August 29th—EIGHT days after her last contact with anyone on August 21st.

Upon being informed of her disappearance, MCPD investigators began their search for Karen, and after checking her personal residence, as well as the immediate area, they had no success in locating her. Leads began to come in after MCPD investigators put out a missing person’s flyer on August 30th, and after a Coordinated Law Enforcement Adult Rescue (CLEAR) alert was issued.

As MCPD officers expanded their investigation, they were notified that a Flock camera picked up Karen’s car being driven. Flock cameras are license plate reader cameras used for surveillance and criminal investigations that capture images of passing vehicles and their license plates. They take images of the rear of vehicles and their license plates and search the NCIC national database referenced earlier for stolen vehicles, missing people, and alerts. If a vehicle is found in the database, the system will alert the authorities, which is what happened in this case.

Clark was found to be driving Karen’s Ford Explorer in an H-E-B parking lot in Pearland on August 25th by Pearland Police Officers who responded to a Flock camera alert they received. Officers found that the vehicle had stolen plates on it from Arkansas, and Clark was immediately taken into custody. Karen was still nowhere to be found until the dreadful news came down that the skeletal remains had been positively confirmed.

Family, friends, and community members gathered at a prayer vigil for Karen Miles on September 14th at Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

According to authorities, Clark is a person of interest in at least one other local disappearance where the victim’s car was stolen.

This is an ongoing story.
