Foundation honors the memory of Commissioner Carlton B. Moore with Friends and Family in the Park

August 24 Event will feature a heart-healthy walk/run, games, live music and workshops Desmond Meade, director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, among the speakers

FORT LAUDEDALE, FL — Longtime Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton B. Moore’s love of community and his devotion to service can be traced in great measure to his mother, 90-year-old Ada B. Moore. For decades, Mrs. Moore was a teacher, supervisor and “second mother” to youngsters at Sunland Park, now known as Carter Park, where she was beloved by both children and adults.

Carlton B. Moore, who served on the Fort Lauderdale City Commission for more than 20 years, was 60-years-old when he died on April 2, 2014, from the complications of a stroke he suffered on Christmas Day, 2013. His dedication to public service and his mother’s commitment to the community’s youth will intersect on Saturday, August 24, during the first annual Carlton B. Moore Friends and Family Day at Osswald Park, 2220 NW 21st Ave., in Fort Lauderdale.

“This event is very special for my grandmother,” said Forrest Moore, Carlton Moore’s youngest son and chairman of the event committee. “She wanted to have an event in the community that gives everyone an opportunity to come together and celebrate family.”

Presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Carlton B. Moore Freedom Foundation (CBMFF), the event will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with registration for a Heart-Healthy Family Walk/Run that is open to children and adults. All other activities will begin at 10 a.m. In addition to the walk/run, the event will feature various games and activities for children and adults to enjoy, as well as live musical entertainment (6 to 8 p.m.), food trucks, a vendors’ market, and free educational workshops.

“We want to honor Commissioner Moore’s memory in a way that best represents who he was in the community,” Rebecca Jones, foundation president, said. “We are inviting everyone to join us in paying tribute to him and building upon the legacy of all that he was able to accomplish.”

Workshop presenters include Desmond Meade, director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, the organization that spearheaded the amendment to the Florida Constitution that restored voting rights to felons.

“We are delighted to have Desmond Meade as one of our workshop presenters,” Jones said. “His presentation fits perfectly with the primary mission of the CBMFF, which is devoted to helping inmates who may have been treated unfairly because of mandatory minimal sentencing.”

Other workshop presenters include Sue-Ann Robinson, an attorney with Ben Crump Law in Fort Lauderdale, who will discuss the importance of serving as a juror; Rob Davis, of The Dream Defenders, who will discuss the importance of political advocacy to create change on the local level; the Broward College Trio Mobile Unit, and more.

In addition to focusing on the criminal justice system, the CBMFF awards $1,000 scholarships to three deserving students in the Fort Lauderdale community each year. To date, $15,000 in scholarships have been presented to students pursuing a college degree.

“Education is the pathway to success in our country and in our community – and this is especially important for people of color,” Jones said.                       “We are very proud of all of our scholarship recipients. Commissioner Moore would be pleased to know that we are paying tribute to him by helping students earn a college degree and by raising awareness about the injustice of mandatory minimum sentencing.”

Looking forward to the foundation’s Friends & Family Day on August 24, Jones extended the Foundation’s thanks for event sponsors. To date, major sponsors include:  King Intelligence and Security Services, Inc.; Shutts & Bowen, LLP; Dr. Ben & Kathy Stephenson; McKinley Insurance Services; On Call Bail Bonds; and the Westside Gazette. Additional sponsors include Ada Moore; Ashanti Cultural Arts; Becky Jones; Black Star World; Daryl Wilcox; Delores Y. McKinley; DeNese Moore; E. L.
