Frankie Glenn, (Class of 1958):
Frankie graduated from Mays High School in 1958. While attending high school, Frankie was a 3 sport athlete, participating in Football, Basketball, and track.
A 3-year starter, he was a record-setting halfback for the Mays Rams football team, on conference championship Ram teams that compiled a 22-4-1 record during his three seasons. Frankie is considered one of the best running backs the school has ever seen.
Rewrote the Mays High record books with many milestones, including school single-sea-son records for most points scored and most TDs scored, 138 and 22, respectively. He set school records for a single season in rushing with 1,519 yards in 1957. The record was subsequently broken by Cecil Young (1,565 two years later). He also set the school record for touchdowns in a single season with 22. His ‘57 Rams went 9-1 and outscored opponents 313-37 while taking the conference runner-up. He gained more than 200 yards rushing in a game against Attucks. He rushed over 100 yards in nine of ten starts, and scored four touchdowns in one game. He went on to become an All-Conference player and was selected to the All-State team. Despite incomplete newspaper records from the era, it has been determined he scored more than 240 points during his career. He was also the team’s leading rusher for 2 out of 3 seasons with the Rams. As a junior he rushed for 833 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. All of his hard work and great ability came to a fitting climax his senior year when he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player of the Year.
Frankie was a sprinter on the MHS track team for 3 years. In high school, he competed in the 100-yard dash, the 440-yard relay, the 880-yard relay and the sprint medley relay. He set school records in several events. It is documented that he ran the 100-yard dash in 10 flat frequently and his opposition’ pushed him to a 9.8 on occasion. In his senior year (1958), Frankie placed fourth in the 100-yard dash at the Dillard relay meet and helped the Rams set a meet record with a 1:33 880 relay win. The team consisted of Curtis Armstrong, Harvey Langston, David Clark and Frankie.
That same year he tied Leon Kirby of Dillard High of Fort Lauderdale for first place in the 100-yard dash in ten seconds flat in a dual track meet with Dillard. Frankie’s best time in the 100-yard dash was 9.8 seconds. He also ran a wind-aided 100-yard dash in 9.6 seconds. Frankie won numerous conference and regional championships. He was part of several relay records. He also participated in the State Track Meet throughout his high school career.
As a basketball player, Frankie played three years of basketball, playing one year for the varsity team after playing on the junior varsity squad (often called “JV”) his sophomore and junior seasons. Played a key reserve role for the Rams as a guard. Following his graduation, he was offered a football scholarship to Florida A&M University. In college, his career ended before it ever truly began. Frankie, who, for one reason or another, never played a down in college.
