The Nonprofit Empowers Girls of Colors to Lead Healthy Lifestyles through Diverse Approach
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— (May23,2022)–As the population of Broward County, Florida continues to remain one of the fastest-growing in the country, proper development for the area’s youth is more important than ever. Recent data from the National School Boards Association indicates that 45% of Black students nationwide attend high-poverty schools, compared with just 8% of white students. Leading efforts to provide a supportive, faith-based environment for Black girls within South Florida is God’s Gift, Inc., a nonprofit with a mission to help students of color achieve their dreams.
By way of mentoring, career preparation and weekend retreats, God’s Gift, Inc. helps girls develop their character, leadership skills and overall self-worth. Since being founded in 2009 by Dr. Ciara Bostick, the organization has partnered with Broward County Parks and Recreation to create afterschool programs, summer camps, and two nightly teen programs for at-risk children and teenagers throughout the area. One program, Sister to Sistah, offers a chance for those ages 12-18to interact with community leaders and other positive role models while another, the virtual Read HERS Book Club, is designed for those girls in sixth through eighth grade and introduces new life skills through literature.
“God’s Gift, Inc. was founded on a set of core values including joy, peace, faithfulness, and goodness and that’s the message that we want each of our girls to carry throughout their lives, knowing that even when times are tough, their willingness to embrace who they are will carry them through,” said Dr. Bostick. “We can’t change where we came from but with God, weal way shave the ability to make a better tomorrow for our selves.
”Dr. Bostick has become a sought-after advocate and motivational speaker for her pioneer work promoting the importance of faith-based mentoring in the lives of the next generation. For those who don’t live in South Florida and still would like to be a part of God’s Gift, Inc., a weekly bible study program is offered worldwide, continuing the conversation through the scriptures.
