GSCBWLA Honors Florida’s Black Women Judges

“Celebration of Black Women on the Bench”

By Brendalyn Edwards

MIAMI, FL– The Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association (GSCBWLA) is pleased to announce that it will host an evening of celebration to honor Black Women Judges of the State of Florida on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 6 p.m.

This month our nation observes the 40th anniversary of the enactment of Pub. L. 97-28, which designated the week of March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week”, the precursor to “Women’s History Month.”  Coincidentally, 1981 is also the first year that an African American woman – former Judge Leah Simms – was elected to serve as a member of the judiciary in the state of Florida.

Despite recent gains, Black women still comprise less than one percent of judges presiding over Florida’s courts. Those who have successfully navigated the inherent challenges of seeking appointment or election to the bench deserve our recognition.  In honor of these courageous Black women, the GSCBWLA invites all members and friends to join us in celebrating the accomplishments of the 51 Black women judges who currently serve in state and federal courts throughout Florida.

The GSCBWLA is hosting this free virtual event to mark the culmination of Women’s History Month 2021 and to highlight the importance of having a diverse judiciary that mirrors the community that it serves. The celebration will be livestreamed across our social media platforms.  For registration information, go to https://gscbwla.org/event-4175259.
