FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following remarks after receiving the Diversity Champion Award from the Urban League of Broward County. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate efficacy in creating, increasing, and incorporating diversity strategies into normal business practices.
“I am proud to accept the Diversity Champion Award from the Urban League of Broward County. It has always been my belief that progress and change can be achieved through mutual respect, and that the best way to be a champion of diversity – for minorities, women, veterans, children, immigrants, and the elderly – is to be a champion for all.”
“Our nation’s diversity makes us stronger, and we should always strive to make it a more inclusive place. In recent years, we have achieved great victories on behalf of all Americans: affirming equal rights regardless of gender, making progress in assuring equal pay for equal work, and realizing affordable health care for all. Just last month, we marked the 50th Anniversary of the March On Washington, a day when hundreds of thousands of men and women from all walks of life came together to demand equal opportunities. It is truly remarkable how far we have come, and I know we will continue to break new boundaries.”
“I would like to extend my appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the Urban League of Broward County for bestowing this honor upon me. I am deeply grateful, and look forward to continuing my partnership with the Urban League to foster greater diversity all across our nation.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
