    Hastings’ Statement on Senate Republicans
    Blocking of Unemployment Benefits

(Washington, D.C.) Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked two votes yesterday to restore emergency unemployment benefits, which lapsed on January 1, 2014:“Helping others in need is a fundamental American principle – one that Republicans seem to have lost sight of.  Congress must act quickly to provide aid to the families and individuals that have seen their unemployment benefits vanish, because of their inaction.

“Withholding critical aid to the nearly 1.5 million Americans facing long-term unemployment in an attempt to force concessions from Democrats is both cruel and shameful. All Republicans have done is reassured the American people that hyper-partisanship is still their top priority in 2014.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
