Former Bethune-Cookman and Alabama State coach Brian Jenkins Sr. will serve as the interim head coach.

With a month remaining before the start of the 2025 HBCU football season, Edward Waters head coach  Toriano Morgan resigned.

According to a report from Football Scoop, Morgan is stepping away from the team for personal reasons and intends to return to coaching soon.

The development comes just a day after Morgan and members Edward Waters football team appeared at SIAC Media Day on Tuesday.

Edward Waters has announced that former Bethune-Cookman and Alabama State head coach Brian Jenkins Sr. will serve as the interim head coach for the 2025 season.

“We are confident in Coach Jenkins’ ability to lead our program with integrity, discipline, and vision,” said Edward Waters Deputy Athletic Director Ashley Conner. “He has earned the trust of our student-athletes and staff, and we’re excited about the leadership he brings into this transitional chapter for Edward Waters football.”

Coach Morgan was hired by Edward Waters in 2021 ahead of their first season in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

In his four seasons as head coach of the Tigers, the Tennessee State alum posted an 18-24 overall record, including a 15-18 record against the SIAC.

His best season came in 2023, when he led the team to a 6-4 overall record, marking the school’s best single-season performance in nearly 20 years.

The Tigers took a significant step back in their 2024 campaign, dropping to a 3-7 overall record.

Before being hired as the head coach of Edward Waters, Morgan served as an assistant coach at Virginia State, Virginia Union, and his alma mater, Tennessee State.
