FORT LAUDERDALE FL — High school students from Saint Thomas Aquinas and Cardinal Gibbons in
Fort Lauderdale recently participated in Holy Cross Hospital’s 15th annual “Day in
the Life of a Nurse” sponsored by
the Nursing Consortium of South Florida. The event offered participants an overview of nursing, career pathways and progression, educational opportunities, hospital tours, nurse shadowing, and a skills fair.
“Career days like a Day in the Life of a Nurse provide priceless opportunities to introduce students to the possibilities that the medical field has to offer,” said Elyce Bishop, Clinical Education and Nurse Residency Coordinator at Holy Cross Hospital.
While participating in the full-day program at Holy Cross, students shadowed healthcare professionals in various areas of the hospital and toured key hospital departments, including the Emergency Room, Simulation Room, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, and the maternity ward. Students also gained hands-on experience with a “SimMan 3G,” a life-size human model that creates training environments with realistic outcomes, learned how to perform CPR, perform newborn care, operate patient lifts, and examine various equipment that is used to treat and care for patients.
