Legendary Howard University men’s basketball coach AB Williamson, who led the program to multiple MEAC championships and was the school’s winningest coach, has died.
Williamson first assumed command of the Bison basketball program in 1975. He remained at the helm for the next 15 seasons, winning back-to-back MEAC Tournament titles in 1980 and 1981. The 1981 club was the first from the MEAC to make the NCAA tournament.
Williamson was named MEAC Coach of the Year on three occasions (1980, 1983, 1987) and remains Howard’s winningest coach, compiling a 228-169 record.
Current Howard men’s basketball coach Kenneth Blakeney issued a heartfelt statement on Williamson’s death.
“One of the great honors for me during my time at Howard has been the relationship I’ve formed with him. AB served as our “Captain of the Day” in 2022 and was on the floor alongside me as we accepted the 2023 MEAC Tournament Trophy, bridging the gap between so many eras of Bison greats,” he said.
“We remember Coach Williamson as more than a coach; he was a builder of character and a pillar of our community. His legacy as the winningest coach in Howard’s history is reflected in the countless lives he touched and the enduring spirit of excellence he fostered.”
The MEAC and Howard Hall of Fame inductee said in a 2022 interview he wanted to be remembered as “a guy who learned and worked very hard. I had a good rapport with my student-athletes, so it makes me feel good when they keep in touch. I did the best I could at all times despite a lack of resources. I have no regrets, and I held my own.”
