Stokes says water complaints rising in his ward

JACKSON, Miss. —A Jackson city councilman says since the boil-water notice and water outages, complaints about water bills are increasing.
Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes held a community meeting Thursday, where he encouraged residents with high or increasing water bills to come out and dispute their water bills before it’s too late. Debra Boswell, with the Mississippi Animal Rescue League, said shelter operators have done that.
“We went to the Water Department. Our administrator went to the Water Department and spoke with them, requesting a copy of the bill. ‘Nope, you don’t owe anything. We’re not going to give you a bill.’ And so, we just stopped calling. We couldn’t get a response, so we stopped calling,” Boswell said. “And then about a year ago, we got our first bill from the city, and it started out with an opening balance of $19,000.”
Stokes said he plans to start the appeal process Friday
