Jumping out of the pan into the fire

However, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, search for me, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear their prayer from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their country. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (GW)

 By Bobby R. Henry, Sr.

I will express my concern about the erosion of democracy, the loss of freedom of speech, and the rise of authoritarian tendencies both domestically and internationally.

I’m worried about the indoctrination of young people and the erosion of their identities in pursuit of something else.

It’s indeed troubling to witness historical patterns repeating themselves, such as the violence on college campuses reminiscent of events like Kent State and South Carolina State Universities where a total of seven students were killed- three on South Carolina State and four on Kent State.

Reflecting on past mistakes is crucial to avoid repeating them, but it also requires vigilance and proactive efforts to uphold democratic values. It’s important to question the narratives and actions that lead to such outcomes and to nurture environments where freedom, equality, and critical thinking thrive. The way things are going, not only in this country, but in the world, it’s becoming more and more difficult to see who His (God fearing) people are.

Now, if we want to become totally complacent, we can sit around and play politricks all day long and watch the erosion of democracy as it is happening right before our very eyes.

History is repeating itself. How long do we have to sit idly by and allow things to erupt on our college campuses which are supposed to be places of higher learning where scholarly minds are supposed to prevail in the thought process or when the confrontation of freedom of speech and human self-worth should be blossoming, and yet they are being force to succumb to dictator mentalities.

Does democracy prevail?

Things are on track moving to an escalation point of what happened at Kent State and South Carolina State Universities where we had college students shot down by authority figures as they participated in the pursuit of freedom, liberty, in self-expression asking for clarity and equality.

If we don’t recognize where we went wrong in the past, we are doomed to continue down that road of destruction to a democratic society.

What’s even worse is when we take our corrupt thinking abroad, and the deterioration of a form of government has now morphed into similar asinine political aspirations that seem to be self-serving at the expense of their citizens. Assimilation can be easily attain when you look like the other.

What hurts is when young people are willing to leave their heritage, their culture, their beliefs to join another without fully understanding, but, are caught up in the atmosphere of jubilated indoctrination.

We need to ask ourselves: “what image, thought patterns and actions are we portraying that our young people are willing to leave their identities behind to become a part of something else?”

It is not too late to save democracy.
