Local Chapter of Black Sorority Celebrates 93 Years of Supporting Black Entrepreneurs and Professionals in the DC Area

     NATIONWIDE — Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated’s mission is “to unite in a sisterhood qualified business and professional women who are encouraging, inspiring, nurturing, and assisting persons engaged in business and professional vocations & entrepreneurial ventures.” For the new sorority year, Gamma chapter’s membership looks forward to building connections, while continuing existing ones and serving the local Washington, DC community under its new leadership.

On June 1, 2023, Founder’s Day, Vonetta Martin was installed as the 35th Chapter President for Gamma chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority alongside six exceptionally talented professionals serving as the chapter’s Executive Committee in southwest, Washington, DC. She is leading her chapter with an outstanding team of women this year. Martin has been an active member of Gamma Chapter for 20 years, is currently an Assistant Director of IT Applications in the state of Maryland, project manager, and has held office on local, regional, and national levels and is the Immediate Past National Executive Director (2015-2023) for Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.

With the local theme of “Back to Basics for Continued Gamma Greatness”, the goal of Martin’s administration is to operate under a 5-point plan that will connect to the larger goals of Gamma chapter, the Eastern Region led by Dr. Audrey Douglas-Cooke, and the vision of Iota’s 24th National President Charlotte D. Berry, MdE , while supporting their Washington, DC partners’ respective leadership. This includes increasing strategic planning, partnerships, and actions to elevate operations and programs, especially in Washington, DC.

“Gamma chapter has been a part of the fabric of Washington, DC for 93 and counting years. And we have no plans on stopping but propelling forward with District partners and Iota affiliates, like Healthy Babies Project, Inc., Black Women’s Agenda, National Council of Negro Women and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, we continue our signature programs and projects.” – said President Martin.

During Fall 2023, Gamma adopted two classes of 55 youth at DCPS Turner Elementary School for our educational programming called Pitch Perfect DC; launched its series called Gamma. Talks for educational webinar series throughout the year for business and professional women, and its Future Iota Leaders youth group.

Upcoming events hosted by Gamma chapter includes serving as chapter hosts for the Iota’s bi-annual National Convention in 2025; annual Eastern Regional Conference in 2028, and signature events like our Power of She & Emerald Sneaker Ball event to support our scholarship programs. All of this while implementing our health & wellness program open to the public called Gamma’s Turtle Trot, a virtual campaign to support health management to decrease cases of COVID-19 & the flu, which are not going away, especially in DC. Gamma is an active participant in its’ National partnership with NCNW’s Good Health WINS campaign. Gamma is seeking donors and major sponsors for these events and activities on an ongoing basis. Gamma Chapter is a chapter within the Eastern Region, one of five regions for Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. It was chartered on April 28, 1931, and serves Washington, DC and the surrounding metropolitan area and is the advising graduate chapter for Delta Phi of Howard University. Iota’s signature programs and projects that Gamma participates in include National American Education Week, Business Month, Toys U Can’t Return and Iota Mother’s Assistance Program (IMAP).
