Museum of Discovery and Science hosted the Second Annual Broward Youth Climate Summit

Noah Valenstein, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, served as the keynote speaker

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. (January 30, 2020)- Broward County Public Schools middle and high school students joined for the Second Annual Broward Youth Climate Summit, hosted for the first time at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS).

More than 750 high school and middle school students from throughout Broward County explored and discussed critical climate-related issues facing south Florida and Broward County. With a total of nine career-oriented 45-minute interactive sessions, students focused on how sea level rise and other climate impacts are influencing careers such as engineering, technology, law, politics, government, economics, arts, communication and social services. In conjunction with the Summit, the students created their own Climate Action Plans to combat sea level rise.

“As a trusted home for presenting scientific facts and evidence, MODS provides the ideal environment for these impassioned student leaders to discuss and share ideas on climate change and resiliency,” shared Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “We are committed to engaging, enriching and inspiring tomorrow’s workforce and protectors of our planet – today.”

The event included numerous state and local leaders to facilitate the programming. Those attending were the keynote speaker, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, Noah Valenstein; Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie; Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr; Hector Ponte, area president of Wells Fargo; and City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis.

MODS is proposing to bring together a consortium of partners to develop an innovative permanent exhibition, “Pathways to Resilience,” which will serve to highlight coastal resiliency and solutions to the impact of climate change.
