The mayor of a New Jersey town who was previously caught saying racial slurs by a Black police officer is facing criminal charges.

According to the Daily Beast, Mayor of Clark Township Sal Bonaccorso was charged with official misconduct after allegedly using township offices and workers for his private landscaping and oil tank removal business.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced the charges on Monday (Nov. 20) following an investigation into a recording where Bonaccorso hurled racial slurs. Bonaccorso previously denied saying the slurs because he has “many Black friends.”

“Allegations of abhorrent language used to degrade crime victims, suspects, and prospective employees raised the alarm of potentially criminal policing and hiring practices,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. “To many in the community, the release of this report has been long overdue.
