The fallout from the Shedeur Sanders draft fiasco has been characterized by frustration and anger but minimal substance. One podcaster, educator Dr. Umar Johnson, firmly believes that they, Deion and Shedeur, should sue the owners, Roger Goodell and the NFL for racial discrimination and collusion on draft day. Whether they eventually do or not is a personal decision that may or may not be under consideration. However, I personally want them to know honorable Black Americans wholeheartedly and unabashedly respect, support and appreciate their outspoken candor and sterling accomplishments.
If you are an NBA fan and you, like me, tuned out or away from games that you assumed were over – based on score – then we did so to our peril or least compunction. At home in Boston, the Celtics blew a 20 point lead, then lost the first game of a seven game series in overtime. Monday night gave us a similar result as the Oklahoma City Thunder let a comfortable lead slip away, losing at home to the Denver Nuggets on a last second three-point shot by Eric Gordon 121-119. Leading the trendy upsets of favorite teams losing home games was the Indiana Pacers’ upset of the number one seeded Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. What I’ve come to realize is that NBA playoff basketball is different as the fortunes of a game could change on a missed free throw, consecutive three pointers following misses by the opponent, or a steal at a critical time in the game. Stay tuned in because a 20 point deficit doesn’t signal the end of the game. Two concepts I believe to be true: it is one of the most difficult games to officiate or call and professional basketball players are some of the greatest athletes in professional sports. Unless something catastrophic occurs, I will watch the entire game/games.
The months of April and May have and are giving us excellent sports entertainment, but it is still difficult to appreciate the exhibited greatness based on the political climate and attempted denigration of African American history by this insidious administration. The Fight continues!!
