NYC man hit by train and electrocuted while trying to retrieve iPhone from tracks

A New York man is dead after jumping onto the metro rail tracks to retrieve an iPhone he’d dropped. Francico Diego, Jr., 22, was electrocuted and hit by a train at the Wakefield-241st Street station at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday morning.
“He’s not the type to jump into the subway to get it,” friend Kevin Atterbury said. “He would just go get a new one. That’s why this is so shocking.”
But Diego’s sister, Nandy, says this is not the first time he’d risked his life for a cell phone. “He’s done it before, which is why he tried to do it again,” said his sister Nandy. “But this time it wasn’t successful. I feel like my heart has been ripped out.”
Witnesses say Diego, Jr. had just told a toll booth agent that he’d dropped his phone on the tracks before he reportedly went in after it. Once the train entered the station he managed to get between two train cars and jumped onto the tracks. He was electrocuted when he touched the third rail.
Diego, Jr. worked as a security guard and DJ. Grief stricken friends gathered outside his home where a memorial had been erected in his memory.
“He said he was going to see me the next day,” said friend Jeannine Vargas. “He was super friendly. He always had a smile on his face.”
