Ohio officers indicted in shooting of unarmed suspect and beating case

A Cleveland police officer was indicted for negligent homicide in the shooting death of an unarmed Black man on Friday. Two former officers in East Cleveland were also indicted for kidnapping and assault for beating a Black man while he was under arrest.
Cleveland officer Alan Buford was indicted for misdemeanor negligent homicide in the 2015 death of Brandon Jones. Buford and his partner, Greg King, were responding to a break-in at a grocery store in Cleveland when Jones was fatally shot.
Jones was carrying a bag of stolen items when Buford and King drew their weapons.
According to Cleveland.com, the officers allege that a struggle between the suspect and the two officers led to the fatal shooting.
“It is not reasonable for a police officer to use deadly force if he or she does not believe a suspect poses a threat of death or serious bodily harm to the police or the public,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty said, according to Reuters.
Tanya Brown, mother of Jones, says she is not getting justice for her son.
“He deserves time for what he did. He killed my baby. He murdered my baby that I carried (for) nine months. He took away a life, for what?” Brown told reporters. “This is all a game and it’s all for show, just taking my family and I through this trial and grand jury and indictment for this cop, Buford, to walk away with probation. This is not justice for my son.”
Buford could face up to six months in jail if convicted.
Also, East Cleveland officers Denayne R. Davidson-Dixon and Gerald A. Spencer II were indicted on charges of kidnapping, dereliction of duty and felonious assault, among other charges, for the July 2016 beating of prisoner Jesse R. Nickerson.
