Oldest person in America gets card from Obama for 114th birthday

    From Your Black World

Last week Your Black World reported on Jeralean Talley of Michigan celebrates her 114th birthday, making her the oldest person in America. Talley, who was born on May 23, 1899, celebrated her birthday last week with friends and family. But in addition to that celebration, Talley also received a birthday note from President Barack Obama.

Talley’s family says she received a handwritten note from President Obama to celebrate her 114th birthday. The note congratulates Talley for being a  “part of an extraordinary generation.”

Talley was originally born in Georgia but later relocated to Michigan.

Last week her friends threw Ms. Talley, who they lovingly refer to as Mother Talley, a lunch to celebrate her 114th birthday and encouraged Talley to share a few words of wisdom with attendees.

Talley, who bowled until she was 101 and still has enough energy to dance, had a few sage words of wisdom for younger generations.  As far as nutrition advice goes, Talley says she drinks coffee and not wine.

She also says she lives by the golden rule: “I want to treat everybody the way I want to be treated. If I give you any advice that same advice comes back to me,” said Talley.

She encouraged people to use their common sense regardless of how much education they have.

“I don’t have much education but what little sense I got, I try to use it” said Talley.
