Parasite latches onto girl’s contact lens and eats through her eye

By Boyce Watkins

A student in Florida was barely able to keep her vision after experiencing the kind of nightmare that one wouldn’t wish on their worst enemy. Ashley Hyde, an 18-year-old senior, thought that a dirty contact lens was relatively harmless. But the lens became infected, leading to inflammation of her eye and blurred vision. Her eyes were red and throbbing with pain, and doctors were at a loss for what was wrong with her.

After doing additional research, they found that the girl had a parasite in her eye that had latched onto her lens. The parasite then began to eat through the girl’s eye, nearly making her blind in the process.

“They did multiple cultures where they scrape your eye. One time, they had to drill into my eye. It was really nasty,” Hyde told Local 10.

The young girl, who was obviously mortified by what happened to her, says that she is going to now have to endure months of treatment to make things right. Dr Adam Clarin says that this incident serves as a reminder to all of us that we should keep our contact lenses clean.

“Every day, we see people come in with contact lens related to infections, complications, ulcers. These are all things that are potentially blinding,” Clarin said.
