    Mr. George, who completed both his high school and college work at Morris Brown, graduating in the Class of 1930, was a stellar performer at guard on both the Purple Wolverine basketball and football teams during the late 1920’s. He did his graduate work at Atlanta University and received his masters degree from New York University.

    First principal of the Arthur and Polly Mays High School in Goulds for more than 20 years. Prior to that time he taught at Booker T. Washington High School in Miami. Within a year he was made principal of Homestead Elementary School now known as Laura C. Saunders Elementary School. He had been principal at Mays High in Goulds since 1939.  He died July 16, 1959.

    Notes for:  Arthur and Polly Mays High School in Goulds ( now Arthur & Polly Mays 6-12 Conservatory for the Arts ) was named after Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Polly) Mays, for their many years of service to the school and the community.

    Bing, Class of 1956, track and football athlete. He was a state champion discus thrower in 1955 and 1956. High School All-Star player. Louie attended Morris Brown, where he played football and ran track, and was later named the Black College Football Player of the Year and earned All-American honors. He was inducted into the Morris Brown College Athletic Hall of Fame.

    Harvey Cooper, Class of 1959, was a two-sport star as a student at Mays High before going to star on the baseball team at Florida A&M University.  He was a member of the 1957 state championship baseball team.  He was voted MVP in his senior year. He received the school’s Most Outstanding Athlete award for the 1958-59 school year. He also played college football for Florida A&M.  Played in minor leagues for Key West in 1966. He was recently inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in baseball.

    Mays High School’s 1957 State Baseball Championship Team.  The 1957 State Championship in baseball was the school’s first state championship in any sport.  Players from left in the back row as identified by Harvey Cooper, who lent this photo, are assistant coach Rufus Tribble, athletic director Carl Hanna, Curtis Baker, Curtis Young, Nathaniel Russ, Bob Cunningham, Herbert Pratt, James Rolle, Harvey Cooper and head coach Earl Dinkins. In the front row are manager Lee Andrew Waters, L.J. Bohler, Jimmy Edgecomb, Emory Collier, Wilbert Bryant and Dennis Bohler.
