Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Speak during NAACP’s 110th National Convention

Speaker of the House of Representatives to deliver remarks at 110th NAACP National Convention

BALTIMOREb (July 2, 2019) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s foremost civil rights organization, has announced that Speaker Nancy Pelosi will give remarks at the 110th National Convention in Detroit on July 22, 2019.

“We are delighted to have Speaker Pelosi join us to address our activists and advocates from across the country about the major issues impacting our communities today,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. “Congress must be the keystone in enacting policies to ensure all Americans have access to jobs paying a livable wage, affordable healthcare, and quality public education for young people. Everyone deserves the right to elect their representatives without voter suppression, racial gerrymandering and foreign interference. We look forward to hearing from Speaker Pelosi on legislative wins and plans to further advance social justice in this highly charged political climate.”

First elected to Congress in 1987, Nancy Pelosi is the only woman to have served as speaker and is the highest-ranking elected woman in United States history. As a member of the Democratic Party, she is in her 17th term as a congresswoman, representing California’s 12th congressional district. Under the leadership of Pelosi, the 111th Congress was heralded as “one of the most productive Congresses in history.”

Working in partnership with President Obama, Speaker Pelosi passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in early 2009 to create and save millions of American jobs, provide relief for American families, and provide a tax cut to 95 percent of working Americans. With the House Democratic Caucus, Pelosi continues to focus on the need to create jobs in America and prevent them from being shipped overseas. President Barack Obama referred to Speaker Pelosi “an extraordinary leader for the American people.”

Now in her third term as Speaker, Pelosi made history again in January 2019 when she regained her position second-in-line to the presidency, the first person to do so in more than 60 years. As Speaker of the House and a Golden Lifetime Member of the NAACP, Pelosi is fighting for the people, working to lower health care costs, increase workers’ pay through strong economic growth and rebuilding America, and clean up corruption to make Washington work for all.
