Rev. Maurice Dawkins came to the NAACP in Fort Lauderdale to work with the churches back in 1999, as I remember, and we quickly got together because I had seen his photograph in a booklet given to me by Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, Founder of Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America, known as OIC. The reason that I remembered Rev. Dawkins was because he had organized the second OIC for Dr. Sullivan’s 1964 Philadelphia start up in California. It is historic how OIC quickly blossomed across America, including Indian Reservations, and later internationally.

The Class of 1966 gathered for a weekend of nostalgia and connection from June 12th to June 14th. The highly anticipated reunion brought together many attendees, with some traveling from as far as Los Angeles, Ca to celebrate their shared heritage and history.
In the early hours of Thursday, April 15, Virginia’s former lieutenant governor, Justin Fairfax, shot and killed his wife of 19 years, Dr. Cerina Wanzer Fairfax, in their home before turning the gun on himself. By noon, the 47-year-old disgraced politician was being eulogized like a saint by several people who once knew him.
Lavita’s small rural community in Clewiston, where she has lived and worked for years, heard about this opportunity and unbeknownst to her began to share gifts of love towards her trip. Many said “we just want to be a part of helping Lavita represent our collective values on the global stage. This was our chance to give back and help her share her vision with the world.”
Taylor was also honored to be one of 113 students nationally to receive the President’s Education Award from President Joe Biden. She aspires to become a dermatologist. Next year she will be attending Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, VA.
Born May 29, 1934, Mrs. Annie Pearl Hill, continues to be active in her home town of Belle Glade, FL.; Former PBC educator; 1957 BCU and IU Graduate; served on numerous County Boards; now serves the community by delivering meals daily to members of the community who are unable to get out.
