   The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and the NNPA Fund brought together over 150 journalists, scholars, and media professionals at Howard University’s Louis Stokes Library to commemorate Black Press Day 2024. The event underscored the nearly two-century-long influence of Black-owned newspapers in shaping narratives, advocating for justice, and preserving cultural history.

       Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remains one of the most powerful moral voices in American history, known for his unyielding commitments to justice, equality, and moral high ground. He is revered in large part for his leadership during the Civil Rights Movement, which transformed the nation by advancing civil rights, challenging systemic racism, and calling on Americans to live up to the highest ideals and promises of the founding fathers—”all men are created equal.” Today, America continues to grapple with division, inequality, and polarized politics. King’s vision is as relevant in 2025 as it was when the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964.

        The tragic death of Javion Magee, a Black man from Chicago, has sparked outrage and concern within the community and beyond. Found on Sept. 11 at the base of a tree in Henderson, NC, with a rope around his neck, the circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious questions about transparency and justice.

       The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) has forcefully condemned the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) for including former President Donald Trump in a panel during its annual convention. The stunning invitation has sparked widespread outrage within the journalism community.

Recently, NAACP unveiled the full list of “55th NAACP Image Awards” nominees with Netflix and Amazon leading the pack with 55 and 27 nominations, respectively. The winners will be revealed during the two–hour LIVE TV special, airing Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 8:00 PM ET/ PT on BET and CBS.

     I am writing to underscore the profound importance of Black Newspapers in the United States and their enduring impact on our society. As we continue to celebrate who we are as a people, we have to reflect on the pivotal role Black Americans have played in shaping our nation, it is imperative that we recognize the invaluable contributions of Black newspapers in preserving our history, amplifying diverse voices, and advocating for justice and equality.
