The firing of Brian Flores can spark a much needed conversation

By Lester A. Johnson III

The firing of Coach Brian Flores seems to have kindled a fire among the Black community. Yes, the same type of fire we’ve seen many times before. When will the lesson be learned that without unity and strategy, we will continue to be the barrel’s bottom? Why won’t Coach Flores and other African American coaches join the ranks with Coach Deion Sanders and enhance the athletic programs at our predominantly Black high schools and HBCU’s?

This can extend the pipeline from predominant Black high schools to HBCU which will then create a better competition level at the HBCU’s bringing more attention to then from the professional realm. Yes, they may have to take a pay cut. However, they’re already millionaires from our prior support and purchases and I’m sure they won’t be bankrupt from this sacrifice and will be a sacrifice of long standing success that will reap benefits in the end just like the long awaited Hall of Fame inductions. If we don’t learn to change the game, then don’t complain when you continue to watch the same play.
