Urban League of Broward County Gets Social Justice Grant from Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have given the Urban League of Broward County a grant to prepare high school students to be productive citizens who know their history, rights, and power to make change.

Created in November 2017 by owner Stephen Ross and Dolphins players, the Social Justice Grants are providing funds for the Urban League of Broward County and other South Florida based organizations to strengthen and expand their impact around community engagement, education and justice reform.

The Urban League of Broward County will use the grant to fund ULBC Youth Voices — a program designed to equip 25 high school age youth of color with tools to bring critical social justice issues to the forefront of decision makers and ensure that their voices are not ignored. Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County, said: “The

Dolphins and their owner Stephen Ross are bringing more resources to our program that empowers our young people to find, cultivate, and raise their voices so they can take on the most pressing issues in our community. Thanks to the help of the Dolphins, we at the Urban League of Broward County are now able to strengthen our initiative that provides our students with leadership, life skills, self-esteem, and cultural pride as they learn to achieve their goals through real-world, community-action experiences.”

The other South Florida recipients of the Social Justice Grants are: Art Detectives, Community Justice Project, Miami Gardens Police Department, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives South Florida Chapter (NOBLE), North Miami Beach Police Athletic League, Pridelines, SAVE, and Trayvon Martin Foundation.

“We believe every member of the South Florida community deserves a level playing field,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “It is important to Stephen Ross and our players to alleviate barriers for these groups to achieve their mission of social justice and improve lives in our community.”
