Three panhandlers were arrested on Wednesday for fatally stabbing a woman after she refused to give them $1. The attack happened as the young woman was walking and taking pictures on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, according to Los Angeles police.
Witnesses say the panhandlers were holding up signs where Calderon and a friend were taking pictures.
Christine Calderon, 23, reportedly took pictures of a sign one of the homeless men was holding before being stabbed in the torso. Police found Calderon bleeding from multiple stabs to the torso on the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard late Tuesday evening.
Police say the cell phone pictures caused an argument which ended with Calderon being stabbed. After the panhandler demanded money and Calderon refused to pay up, he became violent.
‘The girl was just laying on the ground with blood everywhere,’ Monta Cobbin, an employee of the American Eagle store, told NBC. ‘Everyone was trying to help her stop the blood.’
Her mother, Yolonde Tassin, said her daughter had completed her GED and had recently registered for classes at El Camino Community College.
“Her plan was to become an engineer,” Tassin said. “She didn’t want to waste years. She wanted to get in there and do it right.”
Tassin said she became worried about her daughter after she stopped returning her texts.
When detectives showed up at her house, Tassin said, “my daughter’s dead isn’t she?”‘ and the officers nodded.
The homeless men were later apprehended near the scene of the incident.
