Worker gets fired from Baptist daycare for having a baby out of wedlock

    By Dr. Boyce Watkins

Right or wrong? We want kids to have the right values, but at what cost? A daycare worker in North Carolina was fired from her job allegedly for getting pregnant out of wedlock.

Venita Short told ABC News that she is planning legal action against the company that fired her, after she told her bosses she was expecting a child.  According to Short, after hearing about the pregnancy, her bosses at the New Life Daycare and Preschool in Fayetteville, North Carolina began asking her if she had plans to get married.

”I plan to get married one day, but not because I’m pregnant,” she told the administration. But that was when she was allegedly told that her position at the company was in jeopardy. Shortly thereafter, she was fired. Even more interesting is that most of the kids that the woman tended to were from single parent homes themselves.

The woman also says that she has received several pay raises for being a good worker. Pastor of the New Life Baptist Church, Ed Wilson, won’t speak on the matter. But there has been no formal explanation given for Ms. Short’s firing.

“They told me I was fired because I am pregnant and I am not married,” she said.
