‘The primary symbol of Advent is the wreath’

Question: Tell me a few things about the Advent:

Answer: The Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle ushers in the days of Advent. The Feast Day marks the end of the Church year and beginning of Advent. Advent is a 4 week period before Christmas.  Advent, a time of expectant waiting and preparation for celebrating the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas, comes from the Latin word “Adventus” which means ‘the coming”. Although the beginning of Advent starts on the Sunday closest to November 30th the days might vary from year to year.

The carnal Christian (Christians that are guided by the desires of the flesh) celebrate Christmas by how much stuff is received on Christmas day.  If you are honest, at one time we have observed Christmas as such. For the Christian the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the fulfillment of many prophesies a-bout Christ.  Isaiah 9:6 – ‘For unto us a child is born, unto us a child is given…..’ Matthew 1:23 – ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, “which  translated is’ God with us”.

The primary symbol of Advent is the wreath. There are four candles on the wreath – three purple or blue and one pink. For the Advent purist, at no time are the ‘so call’ Christmas colors of red, green, gold, silver and white used. Some churches combine the colors of Advent and Christmas. The purple candles are lit week 1, 2 and 4. The pink is lit only during week 3. The purple candles symbolize hope – peace – Love, and the pink candle re-presents joy.

Jesus first coming was to save the lost – Luke 19:10; and His second coming is to judge the world and rule forever – The Book of Revelation.
