South Florida to host the Links, Inc. Southern area conference

     MIAMI, FL — South Florida’s Gateway to the Americas – Miami – has been selected as the site of the The Links, Incorporated 42nd Southern Area Conference, May 7, through May 12, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 400 S.E. Second Avenue.

    More than 600 women from Links chapters in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Nassau, Bahamas will take part in the conference which includes a service project intended to positively impact the local community.

    In partnership with the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency, a Division of the Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Southern Area chapters will bring attention to the importance of organ donation through the Links for Life service project. The project will kick-off on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, details are forthcoming.

    “We are extremely excited about coming to Miami and bringing awareness to the importance of organ donation, particularly in the African American community,” said Southern Area Director Eneid Francis. “The Links organization is grounded in service and friendship through community and civic outreach, and our time in Miami will be an extension of our commitment to effecting change in our communities. Members of the Dade County, Greater Miami, and Miami-Biscayne Bay chapters of The Links have worked incredibly hard over the last year and members in the Southern Area are looking forward to connecting and reconnecting in Miami.”

    Another key program of the The Links, Inc. is “STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain.” With a focus on students from 6th through 12th grades, the program aims to enhance the current curriculum, emphasizing STEM disciplines, engineering and energy industry career readiness. The Links, Inc. expects to reach approximately 1,200 students across the country with this academic enrichment. The Southern Area of The Links, Inc. devotes much of its volunteer outreach focusing on mentoring and STEM education among urban youth throughout its 78 chapters.

    The three chapters hosting The Links, Inc. 42nd Southern Area Conference include Dade County (Fla.), Greater Miami (Fla.), and Miami-Biscayne Bay (Fla.).
