Delta honors: Celebrating a century of service

    Submitted by Yolanda Felder-Nails

The Broward County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently recognized five community-based organizations at its Delta Honors awards program, in honor of the sorority’s Centennial Celebration.   The chapter, which has served the local community for 57 years, chose to celebrate its 100th year of service by honoring like-minded organizations in the Broward County area. The awards were based on the sorority’s National Five-Point Programmatic Thrust in the areas of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.

The honorees were awarded as follows:

        ·  Educational Development: Urban League of Broward County

        ·  Economic Development: OIC (Opportunities Industrialization Center) of Broward County

        ·  International Awareness and Involvement: Minority Development and Empowerment, Inc.

        ·  Physical and Mental Health: March of Dimes

        ·  Political Awareness and Involvement: Fort Lauderdale Chapter of NAACP

Delta Educational and Life Development Foundation Inc. Board Member, Cameron Benson, served as the Master of Ceremonies for this impressive event that highlighted the local and national history of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Prominent local and state officials, Commissioner Bobby Dubose, Senator Christopher Smith, Representative Perry E. Thurston, Art Kennedy (Assistant to Congressman Alcee Hastings), Commissioner Dale Holness, and Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes, introduced the honorees.

Each brought personal and professional congratulatory wishes to the sorority from their respective offices.  Barbara Thomas, Basileus of Chi Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., presented a plaque and offered congratulatory remarks.  (Mr. Randy Corinthian and Dr. Malcolm M. Black performed special musical selections for the occasion.)

A very special recognition was given to the Northwest Federated Women’s Club (The Negro Women’s Club of Fort Lauderdale) for being a group of women who continue to be courageous and bold in their service to the community. The Broward County Alumnae Chapter has adopted the NFWC this Centennial Year to support their efforts to serve the elderly community.

The Broward County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a long, successful history of providing public service programs to the residents of Broward County. Incorporated in 1955, the chapter, through its Delta Education and Life Development Foundation, Inc., has provided college and vocational scholarship awards, programs recognizing high school students who have excelled academically, tutorial programs, early childhood reading programs, seminars on economic development, as well as programs in adolescent health and development. For more information about chapter programs, visit the website at www.bcacdst.org or P. O. Box 9504, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33310-9504 or (954) 522-2840.
