Frederick and Alfreda Pinkston (Fred and Freda), former longtime Broward County residents, recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. The occasion, “Sixty Years of Bliss,” was held in Atlanta, Georgia where they now reside.

The couple, married in Dade City, Florida on August 19, 1961, lived in Broward from then until 2005 when they re-located to the Atlanta area to be near their family.

Active in the community while they lived in Broward, they were employed by the school district. Since moving to Atlanta, they have continued their participation in church, civic, and community activities as well as their fraternity and sorority.

Their two daughters, Renee Pinkston Arnold, and Maria Pinkston Bazile, live in Atlanta. They are both Plantation High School graduates where they were student leaders. The Pinkstons have four grandchildren: Khari and Micah Arnold, Miyoshi and Mateo Bazile.

The Pinkstons were documented as the first African American family to reside in Plantation when they moved there in 1972. Through the years they received recognition and several awards for their contributions to the community including the Urban League’s Great American Family Award.

When asked about their leaving Broward, Fred Pinkston said, “Leaving Broward County was hard to do. We still miss our church, organizations, friends, and former students, but we are enjoying our lives with our family and friends here in Atlanta.”
