October 2nd event will feature music by Miami Soundbyte Band, games, food trucks and more
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Friends and family of the late Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton B. Moore will honor his memory with a special event from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, in Osswald Park, 2220 NW 21st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The Carlton B. Moore Friends & Family Day will feature a performance by the Miami Soundbyte Band, a bid whist tournament, games, food trucks, workshops and more.
First held in 2019, the event is presented by Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Robert McKenzie, the City of Fort Lauderdale, and the Carlton B. Moore Freedom Foundation (CBMFF) in memory of Moore and his commitment to community service. Moore served on the Fort Lauderdale City Commission for more than 20 years and was a past president of the Fort Lauderdale branch of the NAACP. He was 60 years old when he died on April 2, 2014, from the complications of a stroke he suffered on Christmas Day, 2013.
Moore’s love of community and his devotion to service was inspired in part by his mother, the late Ada B. Moore, who for decades was a teacher, supervisor, and “second mother” to children at Sunland Park, now known as Carter Park. Ada Moore passed away shortly after the inaugural Friends & Family Day, which she was proud to help organize in memory of her son.
“That event was very special for my grandmother,” said Forrest Moore, CBMFF president. “She wanted to have an event in the community that gives everyone an opportunity to come together and celebrate family.”
The CBMFF was established seven years ago to help inmates who may have been treated unfairly because of mandatory minimum sentencing and award scholarships to students in the Fort Lauderdale community. To date, the Foundation has presented $24,000 to deserving high school graduates throughout Broward County.
“Education is the pathway to success in our country and our community – and this is especially important for people of color,” said Rebecca Jones, immediate past foundation president. “We are very proud of all of our scholarship recipients. Commissioner Moore would be pleased to know that we are paying tribute to him by helping students earn a college degree and by raising awareness about the injustice of mandatory minimum sentencing.”
