South Korean authorities were investigating the crowd surge that killed at least 154 partygoers in Seoul on Sunday, as the nation grappled with one of its worst-ever disasters. At least 26 foreign nationals, including two Americans, were killed. More than a dozen embassies worldwide have confirmed victims from their respective countries. It’s unclear what caused Saturday’s surge, but witnesses say partygoers were packed tightly into narrow streets in Itaewon, the capital’s nightlife district, as people celebrated the first Halloween weekend since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted. Almost all of the victims, at least 150 in total, have been identified. There were 56 men and 97 women among those killed. According to a Korean defense ministry official, three South Korean military personnel were also killed. The South Korean government has declared a national mourning period that will last until the end of November 5. During the mourning period citizens will wear ribbons to express their condolences.
