    African American History Public Notice

A divided task force on African American history voted to postpone its annual summer institute for Florida teachers, scheduled for next week, after six new board members joined the group. Long-time members feared delaying the two-day event would add to the “chilling effect” that has led to teachers feeling fearful about teaching African American history. The state’s rejection of the AP African American studies course contributed to those fears, they said. (Photo by Alicia Devine/AP)

In February 2023, the Florida Department of Education convened a statewide group of content experts to review current state academic standards for alignment to s. 1003.42 F.S., as amended by House Bill 7 (2022). After their initial review, the decision was made to draft a new K-12 African American History strand of social studies standards and benchmarks. Benchmarks within the standards have been developed to address all the African American History requirement of s. 1003.42 F.S. These benchmarks opened for public review on 6/2/2023. There will be 21 days for the public to provide comment.
