BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Recently, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24), Ranking Member of the U.S. Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee, proudly announced that Broward County Transit has been awarded a $25 million FY24 Low and No Emission grant under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to advance its sustainability efforts. The funding will support the procurement of battery electric buses equipped with on-route chargers, replacing the older diesel vehicles.

“As one of the five cosponsors of the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act, I’m proud to stand with President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg as we invest in our transit and environment,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “This investment is a game-changer for Broward County Transit and our community as a whole. It will connect residents to our community, and by shifting to clean, electric buses and harnessing renewable energy sources, we’re not just cleaning our air but slashing our carbon footprint. The bipartisan infrastructure law was the largest investment in public transit in U.S. history, and today’s announcement shows exactly that.”

Additionally, the project includes the construction of a solar canopy to provide renewable energy to the transit fleet, furthering efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the broader impact of this initiative, stating, “Today, 117 communities, including Broward County, are receiving the good news that their transit buses are being modernized and their commutes improved through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Biden-Harris Administration is helping agencies across 47 states replace old buses running on dirty, expensive fuels by delivering modern and zero-emission buses, manufactured by American workers, that will connect more people to where they need to go.”

“As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I am committed to bolstering South Florida’s infrastructure and ensuring residents have every resource they need to get ahead,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “Thanks to the work of House Democrats and the Biden Administration, this government has made historic investments in infrastructure, positively affecting the lives of all Floridians.”

The funding announcement underscores Congresswoman Wilson’s commitment to advocating for sustainable solutions that benefit South Florida’s infrastructure. This initiative not only supports Broward County Transit’s modernization goals but also aligns with broader federal efforts to enhance transportation efficiency nationwide.
