MIAMI GARDENS, FL — Florida Memorial University, Miami-Dade’s only Histori-cally Black College or University (HBCU), is experiencing a resurgence in its aviation program. The institution has revamped its aviation and safety program, offering students the opportunity to earn degrees and pilot licenses certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This comprehensive program enables students to pursue careers flying commercial and cargo jets, as well as drones.

In addition to pilot training, students can also pursue a degree in aviation mechanics, gaining FAA certification to maintain and repair large aircraft. After a decline in enrollment since the program’s inception in 1987, FMU’s revitalized aviation program is poised to take off once again, providing students with in-demand skills and career opportunities in the aviation industry.

In a bold move to revitalize its aviation and safety program, Florida Memorial University has appointed two industry experts to lead the charge. Oncida Rollins has been named Chair of the program, while Capt. Yograj S. Raghunauth takes on the role of Associate Chair and Chief Flight Instructor.

Capt. Raghunauth brings a wealth of experience to the program, having served in the Navy where he became a pilot and flew missions across Southeast Asia. With their combined expertise, Rollins and Raghunauth aim to reinvigorate the program and spark students’ interest in pursuing careers as pilots or aircraft technicians.

By hiring these two aviation experts, FMU demonstrates its commitment to revamping the program and providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the aviation industry.

Oneida James Rollins grew up a native of the Southside of Chicago, Illinois, but ultimately he graduated Jack Yates Senior High School in Houston. At that point he left home the last time to earn his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin (“UT”) at 21 years of age.

Captain Yograj S. Raghunauth is a distinguished aviation professional who is recognized for his extensive expertise and contributions to the field. As a certified commercial pilot, flight instructor, and airframe and powerplant mechanic with inspection authorization, Raghunauth brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his roles. His commitment to aviation education is evident through his impactful curriculum development and advanced instructional techniques.
