Miramar renames street in honor of Congressman Alcee Hastings

    By Ermine Brooks

Through a motion by Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis and unanimous approval of the Miramar City Commission, SW 148th Ave South of Miramar Parkway has been renamed to SW 148th Ave/Alcee Hastings Way.

Vice Mayor Davis stated that although the Congressman no longer represents the City of Miramar, he has remained an advocate on Capitol Hill for the City and its surroundings.

In 1977, Alcee Hastings became a judge of the circuit court of Broward County, Florida. In 1979, he was appointed by President Carter as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, representing Florida’s 23rd district, which included parts of the City of Miramar. Subsequent to re-districting and the 2012 election, Alcee Hastings now re-presents Florida’s 20th district since January 2013.
