Meticulous, moving and motivational: South Florida Book Festival

    By Ciera Campbell

On Friday evening Broward County residents gathered at the African American Research library to mix and mingle with The New York’s Times Best Selling Authors. What was phenomenal about this event?  The program identified the presence of the African American voice in literature.

The notable writers collectively excel in multiple genres such as mystery, romance and history.

In total there were nine authors including two successful African American men, S. James Guitard whose notable works include Mocha Love and Chocolate Thoughts and Ancell Pratt.

Pratt grew up in Broward County from humbe beginnings; his self-motivation landed him the opportunity to intern with the Miami Heat. Ancell is known for his inspirational book Jewels of the Game: How to Get a Job Working in Sports.

The women authors included Mary B. Morrison whose bestseller includes Honey B and Single Husbands.

Morrison states that her great grandfather raped her. Morrison knew she wanted to get out of negative situations and writing allowed her to escape.

When asked how do aspiring authors launch their novels Morrison answered “One of the most important things to do is to use the community, your church and family.”

Summer intern Ciera Campbell, is a student at Florida A&M University seeking a bachelor’s degree in Public Relation.
