I awoke this morning with the news of the non-indictment regarding the suspicious death of Nolan Wells, the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, college student whose death has been ruled an accidental drowning. Having served on a grand jury, it is absolutely inconceivable that an indictment wasn’t handed down or granted, based on the myriad unanswered questions surrounding his death, i.e., the cell phone, the implication of assault associated with the recording, and the withheld body parts, virtually rendering the second autopsy commissioned by the Crump team null and void. Just on the aforementioned evidence—and there is much more not listed here—an indictment should have been issued. In my experience, we met usually once a month to hear the mounting evidence presented only by the prosecutor seeking an indictment on behalf of the plaintiff. Our objective was to decide whether an indictment should be issued based on said evidence. The overwhelming evidence made an indictment a no-brainer.
The COVER-UP began with the police stating that it was a drowning, followed by accusations of Ben Crump sewing racial division—laughable—and ending with no indictment. What a travesty of justice. As a football enthusiast, I watched with bated breath Ole Miss’s scintillating victory over LSU, which presently is couched in sincere remorse, as 90% of players on both teams were African American. Our athletes have enormous power to effect social change.
In 2015, University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe was forced to resign because of his handling of on-campus racial issues, primarily because the Black football players refused to play if he didn’t abdicate his position.
Another opportunity was missed when Colin Kaepernick knelt during the playing of the national anthem in protest of racial injustice in America. Do you remember the found-not-guilty police strangling Eric Garner to death for merely selling cigarettes? Then our idiot-in-chief called him a SOB. What if more NFL players, other than teammate Eric Reid, had joined him in the protest? Though racism is alive and well, the capitalists care most about the bottom line: profit. There is enormous potential in a unified athletic front on all levels, particularly on the collegiate and professional levels.
The most effective weapon we currently have is the vote, so encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote while we still can.
Polisports will guide my column until democracy is restored in government. The Democratic Party must lead the united effort by supporting Angie Nixon’s Senate candidacy as well as David Jolly for governor.
I therefore urge you to not only support getting out the vote but also by voting BLUE.
