Informed Families launches helpful resource guide for Florida parents in advance of Red Ribbon Week®
Florida families also invited to participate in national contest to win $1000 for their school and an iPad for the home
Informed Families, Florida’s most renowned resource on positive parenting, is offering a helping hand to parents across Florida on how to talk to their kids about drugs and alcohol just in time for the 28th annual Red Ribbon Week®. Unfortunately, there are no translators or decoders when it comes to parents communicating with their children. However, Informed Families’ new Parent Guide provides several useful tips on getting the conversation started, including sitting down together for family meals and getting kids engaged in after school activities.

Toolkit for educators who are interested in promoting the upcoming Red Ribbon Week® in their schools and communities.
In addition, Informed Families is encouraging everyone to show their enthusiasm for Red Ribbon Week® through social media!
Members of the community are invited to “wear red” this month and use the hashtags, #LiveRed and #FLRedRibbon, in photos posted on social media networks.
As the Florida sponsor of Red Ribbon Week®, Informed Families is also calling for entries to participate in this year’s national Red Ribbon Week® contest. Here’s how to enter to win $1,000 for your K-12 school and an iPad for the home.
1.) Students bring the Red Ribbon Week® message home by working alongside parents to decorate their front door, mailbox or fence with a red ribbon and this year’s theme “A Healthy Me Is Drug Free™.”
2.) Take a photo with the family and your Red Ribbon Week® decoration, then upload to redribbon.org/contest by Nov. 4 (must be 18+to upload your photos).
3.) The voting begins! Ask your family and friends to vote for your entry at redribbon.org/vote Nov. 5-19, 2013. Ten lucky winners from regions across the U.S. will win. Winners will be announced at redribbon.org on Dec. 6, 2013 and recognized at winning schools throughout December.
“Students will once again take Red Ribbon Week’s® message of prevention home to their neighborhoods with this national contest,” said the Informed Families’ President Peggy Sapp. “By decorating their homes together with this year’s Red Ribbon theme, families carry the message to their communities.” Red Ribbon Week®, the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign reaches more than 80 million people nationwide.
The Drug Enforcement Ad-ministration (DEA) is co-sponsoring this year’s national contest. “The DEA is proud to help sponsor this contest and other initiatives that spread the drug prevention message throughout our local communities,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “Wearing red ribbons in October represents our pledge to be drug free and honors the sacrifice of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and all who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs.”
