OMEGA-GROUNDBREAKINGA dream deferred no longer: Historic groundbreaking

L to r: Eta Nu Housing Chair Harry Harrell, former Commissioner Woodrow Poitier,  Omega’s 35th Grand Basileus Dorsey C.  Miller, Commissioner Ed Phillips, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, St. Rep. Gwendolyn Clarke-Reed, Eta Nu Charter Member Robert Bailey, Eta Nu Basileus Moses Barnes, Eta Nu Founder James L. Jones, Eta Nu’s first Housing Chair Samuel G. Clear and Commissioner Barry Dockswell.

On Aug. 27, 2015, the Eta Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held a historic groundbreaking ceremony on the corner of MLK Boulevard and  Northwest 10th Avenue in Pompano Beach, Fla., the site of the future home of the Eta Nu Education Center. A concept envisioned by our founders and members as a way to positively impact the Pompano and Broward communities evolved because of relationships built over many years between elected officials past and present like former Commissioner E. Pat Larkin, Woodrow Poitier, Ed Phillips, City of Pompano commissioners, visionary Mayor Lamar Fisher, the CRA and our last surviving founder, James L. Jones.

Having observed Eta Nu’s impact in the community through its social action and mentorship initiatives solidified and strengthen the partnership.

The festive, much-anticipated occasion attracted well over 125 attendees from public officials, Delta Sigma Theta (State Rep. Gwendolyn Clarke- Reed), Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, including former Grand Basileus Dorsey Miller and various other segments of the community. The center becomes the third project sponsored by the CRA, joining the Ali Building and the mini-mall housing Betty’s Restaurant, located just west of Sixth Avenue, all associated with the redevelopment of the northwest corridor.

Under the astute leadership of Brother Harry Harrell, Eta Nu housing chair, who accepted the challenge begun by previous chairs Samuel Clear, Wayne Cross and Terry Brown, it is now a dream realized. To all the men of Omega who labored for years contributing their time and financial resources and to our myriad supporters, we salute you and thank you for we realize that with God all things are possible.
